Front Row

I had seats in the front row
For the Bill Callahan show
A hundred odd miles and two hours to go
Not gonna make it, traffic real slow
Friends are texting hey let’s meet in the bar
I’m throwing down my phone in my mother’s car
This was meant to be my sweet relief
Grinding the gears, grinding my teeth
I gave up hope and I just went home
Housemates in their rooms, I’m feeling so alone
I loaded up on codeine and went for a walk
Hackney town hall, frozen 10 o'clock
Saw the homeless woman who sits by the shop
Ready to say “sorry I’ve not got…”
Then she looks up and asks “are you OK?”
My body collapsed, my anger blew away
I sat on the floor, told her how I was
All torn up, because because
She said her dog usually hated men
And I felt good about that then

Old Afternoon

That old afternoon song
Was always missing the C
Raised up by three
Or is it one and a half?
Oh please don’t laugh
I don’t read
Music at all
I just hear its call
On an old afternoon
Who is missing the sea
And also missing me
Because I don’t come to play
Or at least not in that way
If at all anymore
I go to that cupboard
I look at a ten year old jar of dried sage
And there’s another half full
So I combine the two
And I throw the old jar away
But not the old sage
It looks fine and it tastes
Like the last meal my father made
For me when I stayed
With him for three days
And oh how we laughed so hard
At Allo’ Allo!
I said it was like
A pantomime
And he said “Oh how true!”
And we laughed our way through
To an old afternoon
When I kissed him goodbye
He was so sweet and kind
Mellow my mind
Yellow
Yellow hoodie man
He was a Goodies fan
